University College Dublin (UCD) would like to invite you to take part in a research study. This Participant Information Leaflet tells you about the study. It explains what is involved if you agree to take part. Knowing what is involved will help you decide if you want to take part in the research. Please read this information carefully. Ask questions about anything that you don’t understand or want to know more about. 

Participation in this research is voluntary. If you don’t wish to take part, you don’t have to. 

If you decide you want to take part in the research project, you can click on Yes I agree and proceed with the survey. By proceeding you are telling UCD that you:

  1. Title of the research

Mapping and Empowering Under-Represented Cyclists in Bike Journeys: An Intersectional, Community-Centred Approach

  1. What is this research about? / Why is this study being done?

UCD wants to understand who is currently using bike share schemes in Dublin and empower underrepresented groups to increase the uptake of bike share as a sustainable mode of transport. 

  1. Why have I been invited to take part?

You have been invited to take part because you are a user of bike share schemes in Dublin.

  1. Do I have to take part ? 

No, you do not have to take part in this study. It is your choice. You do not have to give a reason for not taking part in this study.

  1. What will happen if I decide to take part in this research study? What do I need to do ?

You will be asked some questions regarding socio-demographics and travel behaviour. The data collected will be entirely anonymised. The survey will take about 5-10 minutes to complete. Your responses will only be used for research purposes. 

  1. Can I withdraw from the study? What happens if I change my mind ?

You can change your mind about continuing participation at any time during the survey without giving a reason. If you wish to withdraw from this research study, simply close the browser window without clicking submit. 

However, since the data collected is anonymised and the researchers are unable to tell which is your information within the dataset it will not be possible to withdraw after you have clicked submit. 

  1. What are the benefits of my participation in this research: to me, to the researchers, and to any third parties involved ?

Taking part in this study may not directly benefit you. However, UCD hopes that this research may help to better understand the current usership of bike share in Dublin and contribute to improving the uptake of bike share as a sustainable mode of transport across communities in Dublin. By taking part in this research, you will contribute to academic knowledge and potentially policy development. The researchers may benefit from completion of this research study in terms of publications and the award of a doctoral degree.  

  1. What are the risks of taking part in this research study?

There is minimal risk associated with participation in this study. 

  1. How will I find out what happens with this research study?

The results of the study will be reported in academic journals and disclosed at academic conferences. No information which reveals your identity will ever be disclosed, as no such identifiable information is being collected. The findings from this research study will be used to assess current bike share usership and offer suggestions about how usership can be improved. 

Data Protection

  1. What information about me will be used in this research study?

UCD will use the following anonymised information about you (personal data) for this research study: Age range, Gender, Ethnicity, Education level, Occupation type, Caring responsibility, Income range, bike share use purposes and patterns. 

  1. How will my data be used?

Your anonymised data will be entered into a secure database, where it will be combined with the data from other participants in this research study. The data will be analysed to obtain a better understanding about the usership of the bike share scheme.

The results of the study will be reported in academic journals and disclosed at academic conferences. No information which reveals your identity will be disclosed.”

The data will be archived and destroyed after the project is completed. 

  1. Who will have access to my personal data? What will happen to my personal data?

Only the principal researcher will have access to your personal data in its anonymised form. It will be held for the duration of the research study and destroyed when it is completed. 

  1. How will my personal data be protected? Will it be kept confidential ?

Your privacy is important to UCD. All information which is collected about you during the research will be kept strictly confidential even while it is anonymised.. Electronic data will be password protected and accessed only by the researcher. These actions will be taken to protect your personal data. 

All the members of the Research Team have taken General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) training at University College Dublin. 

  1. How long will my data be retained by this project ?

Your personal data will be retained until the study has been completed and reported on. 

  1. What is the lawful basis to use my personal data ?

UCD will rely on the legal bases of Article 6.1(a) consent, Article 6.1(e) ‘public interest’  and for data that are more sensitive on the condition in Article 9.2 (j) ‘scientific research purposes’ of the General Data Protection Regulation to process your personal data. 

19. What are my rights ? 

You are entitled to:

  • object to UCD’s use of your personal data or any further use;

  • request access to your personal data and to receive a copy of it (up to the point of anonymisation);

  • request inaccurate personal data be corrected or deleted;

  • request restriction of UCD’s use of your personal data (if it is inaccurate); 

  • request deletion of your data, if no longer needed.

By law you can exercise the above rights in relation to your personal data, unless certain limitations apply, for example if the request would make it impossible or very difficult to conduct the research, or put the quality of the research findings at risk. For example, if the study results / information has already been published then UCD will not be able to delete it.”
